Levenshulme Market Heritage TrailThe little known history of one of Manchester’s most diverse and fascinating areas will be uncovered this weekend in a new heritage walk.

The Levenshulme Heritage Walk is the first bespoke guided tour of its kind for an area of the city that has a rich history hidden in its well walked streets

Little known hidden gems will be uncovered by Manchester Guided Tours guide, Peter O’Grady, who will transport visitors through the years of the town’s history, starting at 11am and 2pm from the market on Station Car Park and will finish at the Antiques Village – where walkers will also receive a free cup of tea from the Antiques Village Café.

The tour is free to people who have signed up to the TAG (pass it on!) card, which offers unlimited access to discounts at a wide range of independent Levenshulme businesses.

TAG (pass it on!) cards are available for only £2.50 when bought this weekend from Levenshulme Market or £5 when bought online or from selected local shops

Complementing an exciting list of events in Levenshulme high street, the guided tour hopes to build on the success of the new monthly street markets which have seen a wide range of traders from across the region attract large crowds – crucial in protecting the high street and boosting the local economy.

Cllr Rosa Battle, Manchester City Council’s executive member for culture and leisure, said: “Levenshulme undoubtedly has a fascinating history that many people – even long-time residents – won’t know, and tours like this are a wonderful way to explore the past and gain an insight that normally would not be available.

“Town centres are suffering across the country but the Levenshulme people are working incredibly hard to make sure the area remains an attractive place to visit, and the guided tour is yet another innovative idea that keeps visitors returning – crucial to ensure the success of any high street.

Levenshulme has also been chosen as a second round candidate for the Portas Pilot, which if successful, could inject £100,000 to revitalising the high street which would give a major lift to an area already working exceptionally hard to secure a prosperous future
