'Cool, green urban village' with 3,500 homes to be built in Stockport
Stockport is currently in the midst of a £1bn regeneration boom. The 'revolution' has already seen the arrival of the Red Rock leisure complex and the Stockport Exchange office development.
Council leader Elise Wilson says it is now time to focus on bringing new homes - of all types and tenures - to the town centre.
Speaking after the plans went out to public consultation, she said: “The momentum we’ve already generated provides the ideal platform for the long-term regeneration of Town Centre West as Greater Manchester’s newest, coolest and greenest new urban village.
The ambitious vision for Stockport Town Centre West includes up to 3,500 new homes set in a ‘walkable neighbourhood’, with ‘enviable public transport’ connections.
It is made up of five distinct zones - Weirside, Station Quarter, Stockport Exchange Business Quarter, Royal George and Brinksway.
The plan is to create one MILLION sq ft of extra employment space, as well as new public spaces and the opening up of the River Mersey.
Better walking and cycling routes are also proposed, as well as an enhanced digital infrastructure 'to ensure the area is at the cutting edge of town centre living in the 21st century'.
Wilson hopes 'local people, businesses, and stakeholders will be as excited as we are about these proposals and engage with the consultation so that it becomes a collective vision and ambition that we all share”.
