Moston Area Guide
Moston is a district of Manchester, approximately 3 miles (5 km) north east of the city centre. Historically a part of Lancashire, Moston is a predominantly residential area, with a population of about 12,500 and has a land coverage is approximately 1,300 acres.
About Moston
The name Moston may derive from the Old English words moss and ton, where moss usually referred to a place that was mossy, marshy or peat bog, and ton signified a town or settlement. The area of White Moss is an area which is an example of the town which still retains these characteristics.
Moston Local Shops
Moston Market based on Hartley Street off Moston Lane consists of 33 stalls, trading days are Tues, Thurs, Friday and Saturday’s so why not grab a bargain!
The main strip through Moston on Moston Lane itself have a large variety of shops from Charity shops, hairdressers, clothing, furnishings, convenient stores and local banks.
Manchester & District Home for Lost Dogs was founded in 1893 by a group of Manchester Businessmen who were concerned about the large number of stray dogs roaming the City in Manchester, They care for over 7,000 stray and abandoned dogs every year.
The Thatched House
The thatched housed located at 573 Moston Lane, Moston has recently ben refurbished and offers great entertainment every day of the week, inc. Quiz Night, Snooker/Pool, Darts, Bingo, Live Music, Sky and much more.
The Manchester College
This is a further education college based in Manchester. It opened on 1 August 2008, as the result of a merger between City College Manchester and Manchester College of Arts and Technology to form an 80,000 student ‘supercollege. It is the largest provider of “Offender Learning” in the Greater Manchester region, as this area was inherited from City College Manchester
Moston Campus is based on Ashley lane, Moston, M9 4WU and has an excellent reputation for creative programmes, particularly in art and design, fashion and furniture crafts. The centre also offers courses in hospitality and catering, automotive studies and construction. Most courses offered are vocational but students on advanced level courses will have the opportunity to complement their main programme by studying one of the four AS/A Levels offered at this centre.
St Matthews RC High School
This high school had outstanding GCSE results in 2009, 77% of their students gained 5 or more A*-C Grades and so they aim for the highest achievement at every level and encourage all members of the school community to realise their full potential they also have an excellent reputation for sport and performing arts.
New Moston School
This primary school is located on Moston Lane East, New Moston, It was formed by the amalgamation of New Moston Junior School and New Moston Infant School. The new school became known as New Moston Primary School and currently have approximatly 400 children on roll.
Bus Service
Moston is very well served by buses primarily along Moston Lane directly to and from Manchester city centre. Bus routes directly to Manchester city centre include 51, 81, 88, 112, 118, 77, 80, 89, 149 and 188. Bus routes from Moston also go directly to Middleton, Pendleton, Failsworth, Oldham, Cheetham Hill and Chadderton, great for taking a day out to go shopping.
Moston Train Station
Moston railway station is an unmanned railway station and is located off Hollinwood Avenue in New Moston. The routes from the station are the Caldervale and Oldham Loop Lines and is managed by Northern Rail.
Hough Hall
Hough Hall is the oldest building in the Moston area and is situated on Hough Hall Road. The Hall was listed as a Grade II listed building on the 3 October, 1974] and was erected in approximately the 16th-17th centuries. HOUGH HALL was long the residence of a family named Halgh or Hough; the last of the line, Captain Robert Hough, took the king’s side in the Civil War and had his estate sequestered. It was purchased in 1685 by James Lightbowne, and soon afterwards passed to the Minshulls of Chorlton. In or soon after 1774 it was purchased by Samuel Taylor, by whose representative it was sold about 1880 to the late Robert Ward, whose widow is the present owner and occupier
Moston Valley Football Club
Moston Valley Football Club is an FA Charter Standard Club with its feet firmly rooted in the Lightbowne and Moston Vale area and Community. The club has grown from strength to strength since receiving the FA Charter Standard Award in 2005. Their aim is to offer coaching and competitive opportunities in football within the local community and provide equality throughout the club.
Broadhurst Park
Originating from a 19th century park, Broadhurst Park sits in the Moston ward in a highly populated area with housing estates all around and two local schools, one of which is on the park boundary and the other across the road.
The park is an important football leisure facility in North Manchester, and provides a range of exciting and diverse activity opportunities and community events. It is key green space within the Irk River Valley corridor. Broadhurst Park and Field stage summer funfairs, an annual bonfire/firework display and summer sports activities for children.
