Countdown to Christmas: Unwrapping the Numbers

countdown to christmas unwrapping the numbers

As the most magical month of the year jingles into view, Advent begins, and many of us start counting down the days (and chocolates) to Christmas with festive cheer.

The world’s most expensive Advent calendar, created by Debbie Wingham for a Swiss client, came in at a dazzling £7.8 million – around 27× the average UK house price of £293,000.

Almost half (48%) of people in the UK plan to buy an Advent calendar in 2025. Last year, around a third paid £5–£20, 10% spent £20–£50, 4% £50–£75, and 3% splashed out over £75. The tradition of marking the days until Christmas with a calendar dates back to 19th-century Germany, later becoming a UK staple after World War 2.
