Openshaw Area Guide
Openshaw was incorporated into the City of Manchester in 1890. Its area lies between Ashton Old Road and Gorton.

Openshaw Local Shopping
Openshaw has many small supermarkets and local shops on Aston Old Road. And it’s just half a mile from Ashton Old Road to Gorton market on Garratt Way. Homes in the north west of Openshaw are not too far from Ashton New Road, Clayton where there are more shops. Shopping facilities have been improved greatly by the new ‘East Manchester town centre’ between Bank Street and Ashton New Road in nearby Clayton. The modern complex includes a huge Asda superstore – there’ll be smaller local shops, banks, post office, a lively market, hotel and conference facilities, and a variety of bars and restaurants in the near future.
This market is based in the East of Manchester and houses both our wholesale food market and the popular Sunday market and car boot sale. It is a purpose built site with great goods at low prices. The wholesale food market is a fantastic opportunity for all traders, shopkeepers and other retailers to purchase fresh fruit, vegetables and flowers within the comfort of two large covered buyers
Openshaw Healthcare
Openshaw is home to a brand new state-of-the art £3 million health centre.
This provides residents with a wide range of services including midwifery and antenatal, family planning, physiotherapy and counseling services. A community alcohol team is based at the centre and alternative medicines such as acupuncture will also be available.
There is also a day centre situated on Catherine Street, Openshaw
MANCAT Manchester College of Art and Technology
MANCAT (Manchester College of Art and Technology) college (left) on Whitworth Street near Ashton Old Road specialises in new technical and industrial training – including construction craft and building services, motor engineering and computer technology.

Openshaw currently has no High School although Wright Robinson Sports College and Fairfield High school for girls is nearby.
Primary Schools
Openshaw is home to four excellent primary schools; St Clement’s C of E primary school on Abbey Hey Lane, Varna Street Primary School, Higher Openshaw Community School (formerly Clayton Brook Primary School) off High Leigh Road and St Barnabas C of E on Parkhouse Street.
In June 2006 we received our Silver Healthy Schools’ award following extensive work on teaching our children about the benefits of healthy eating options. We also raised children’s awareness of the importance of recycling, reusing and reducing the amount of paper we use and reviewed our Anti-bullying Policy.
Openshaw Trains
There are also train stations situated locally which are; Gorton Rail (situated on the Gorton / Openshaw border), Ashbury’s Rail (located in Openshaw West near Sport City) and Fairfield Rail (located in East Openshaw at the far end of Ashton Old Road).
However, due to the frequency of the buses it is many people’s preferred option to take this more frequent, accessible and cheaper option
Openshaw Buses
With Openshaw situated only a few miles from Manchester City Centre, it is common for people to take advantage of the regular bus service which runs into the Centre. The most regular bus is the 219 service which runs every 8-10 minutes (15 minutes on Sunday) from Ashton to Manchester via Openshaw.
Manchester City Stadium and Velodrome
On the outskirts of Openshaw West you can find Sport City (pictured right). Here you can find the Manchester Velodrome, shopping facilities to include ASDA superstore, modern apartments aimed at working professionals and the biggest site of all, Manchester City Football Club.
The Commonwealth Games brought a range of excellent new sporting facilities closer to Higher Openshaw – including athletics, squash and tennis. Some of the facilities include the national cycling centre (the Velodrome) and Ravensbury community swimming pool on Alpine Street – both about a mile away in Clayton.
