  3. The atom was first split in 1919 and it happened in Manchester. This was down to the work of Ernest Rutherford, a man who had already been awarded a Nobel Prize in 1908 for his Chemistry work on radiation.
  4. One of the most famous brands in the world has Manchester to thank for this development. This is because the city was the setting for the first ever meeting of Henry Royce and Charles Rolls. This meeting took place in 1904 and the two combined to make the Rolls-Royce company.
  5. Another major brand that took a great step forward in Manchester was Marks & Spencer. While the store is more commonly associated with Leeds, where the first market stall of the firm was opened, Manchester was the home of the company’s first store.
  6. The nature of travel was improved considerably in Manchester. This is down to the fact that the first passenger train station was opened in the city back in 1830.
  7. While there is a great sense of history in Manchester, modern day Manchester has a lot to offer. The benefits of modern Manchester were acknowledged when a study found Manchester to be the most liveable UK city of 2013.

  9. A major step forward for computers was taken in Manchester with the development of the Small Scale Experimental Machine, which was referred to as Baby or SSEM. This was designed and constructed in 1948 at the University of Manchester and it is hailed as the world’s first programmable computer.
  10. Vegetarianism was started in Salford by a group of people who were keen to advocate the benefits of a meat free diet.
