More renters are small business owners

Gill - Head Gillian Bell Oct 6, 2023, 12:30 PM

Newly released data from the 2021 census shows that there were significant changes in the make-up of people living in the private rental sector in the last decade.

There was a 17% jump in the proportion of private sector renters working in higher managerial and professional occupations, and today they make up almost one in six.

The proportion of private sector renters who own small businesses rose by 30% since 2011 – and there were over 660,000 at the latest count.

Renting is becoming a more popular lifestyle choice in the UK and new providers are entering the market to meet the rising demand. Source: Dataloft, Census 2021, Census 2011
