Gearing up for world bicycle day

Rebecca Galgut Jun 4, 2024, 14:00 PM

Cycling is good for our health and wellbeing and, because it is one of the most sustainable modes of transport, it's good for the planet too. That's why we mark World Bicycle Day every June, to encourage more people to take to two wheels.

The number of people riding bikes shifted up a gear after the pandemic, as did the distances they covered. 8.5 million people cycled more than once a week in 2021, up from an average of 7.4 million in the period 2015 to 2019.

The UK Local Authority where cycling is most popular is Cambridge, where 50% of the population regularly travel by bike, followed by Oxford (35%), Isles of Scilly (30%), Hackney (28%), and Southwark (25%). Source: #Dataloft by PriceHubble, Cycling UK, Department for Transport.
